July has been the hardest month of the year: a 4–11 start to it, and a lead that was four games in late June is down to one over the Cubs. The front office answered at the deadline by reshaping the rotation and lineup in two deals — moving Marcell Ozuna and Mitch Keller, the two veterans it had been shopping all summer, and bringing back starting pitching. Paul Skenes (11–4, 2.69 ERA) and Braxton Ashcraft (9–7, 2.53 ERA) are still carrying the staff.
